Luc Schwab is a British born artist, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. His new "excavation" paintings are an exploration of the history and meaning behind the human desire to communicate through art. These striking yet subtle works have the appearance of unidentified wall markings, scrawls, or even perhaps writing, preserved over the years by natural buildup and decay, then cut away to reveal what was once beneath. These works are collaged paper embedded in acrylic on wood panel, with a finished surface like that of polished marble. From a distance the paintings give an appearance of rough, hewn textured stone, but up close you see the soft and smooth surface, which entices the viewer to a closer inspection.

KOOL-AID PIE

1 23oz. pkg Kool-Aid (any flavor)
3/4 c. sugar
1 13oz. can Pet evaporated milk
1 box vanilla wafers

Chill milk in freezer. Mix sugar & Kool-Aid. When milk is ready, beat with electric mixer gradually adding sugar & Kool-Aid until stiff. Pour into vanilla crumb pie shell. Keep in freezer until ready to serve.

We are proud to present works of Melanie Jelacic as the second of many on
going solo shows in our newly designed Art Salon: Vacation Photo Paintings.

Vacation Photo Paintings is a series of paintings made from photographs lent
from friends. The rules being: 1. Has to a vacation snap shot 2. The image
must have an animal or animal based product in a human created setting 3.
The image should be almost monochromatic. I am interested in people
continuing interest to collect uncommon images. All these images have a feel
of being wild/natural but all take place in controlled human environments.

Melanie Jelacic's Brooklyn studio is small but eyes wonder; hanging canvases
of different degrees of finish are mixed upon her collection of art, insects,
and fauna. Melanie Jelacic's sculptural and painterly environments create
an intimate correspondence between the organic and the man-made, the
zoological and the sociological, the historical and mythological, high-art and
the every-day. The effect of her work is less akin to the taxonomic order of
the contemporary sense than to the Renaissance Wunderkammer, or wonder-
cabinet, where the order of oddity prevailed and nature's anomalies were
casually but deliberately allied with the marvels of new technology. In these
quixotic private collections, select earthly artifacts were displayed together in
relationships that exposed their unlikely likeness and unexpected strangeness.
Similarly, Jelacic's materially eclectic and broadly allusive pieces function like
small, personal collections, or curated worlds; in them, familiar methods of
knowing produce newly clarifying results, and so-thought well-known objects
are endowed with a sense of interior life, at once elegantly unfathomable
and imaginatively evocative. In discussion with the artist about her art the
conversation is deeply rooted in science but always emerges to become
emotional and nonsensical. The constant pendulum between fact and fantasy
keeps her ideas in motion.

Melanie Jelacic is a long time resident of Brooklyn and her studio is presently
in Bushwick, Brooklyn. This is her first solo show. See more of her work online

1 can sweet cond. milk

1/2 c. lemon juice

1 med. size can pineapple tidbits, chopped, drained

1 med. size can mandarin oranges, chopped, drained

1 c. finely chopped nuts

1 lg. container Cool Whip

1 graham cracker crust

In a large bowl, combine milk & lemon juice, add well drained pineapple & mandarin oranges. Fold in Cool Whip & nuts. Pour into 9 x 13" pan that has been lined with graham cracker crust. This can be served as a salad, omit crust, cut in squares & serve on lettuce.

NUTS & BOLTS

4 c. Cheerios Cereal

1 1/2 c. mixed nuts & peanuts

1 1/2 c. seasoned croutons

1 c. pretzel sticks

1/2 c. salad oil

2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp.garlic salt

1/4 tsp. salt

Heat oven to 275 degrees. In greased baking pan 13x9x2, mix cereal, nuts, crutons & pretzel sticks. Blend remaining ingredients. Pour over cereal mixture, mix well. Bake uncovered 45 min., stirring occasionally.

BIOGRAPHY

Marjorie Van Cura was born in Madison, Wisconsin and grew up in central Massachusetts. Her mother, a former portrait artist, was her first art teacher. Her father is a computer programmer with a diagnostics laboratory for neurological disorders. Marjorie has a BFA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. She has had additional studies at the Worcester Art Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Marjorie Van Cura perceives her work as social commentary, informed by several themes of interest that include the origin and genetic make-up of species, the phenomenon of evolution, and issues of identity, alienation, and community in our Digital Age. Her mixed-media paintings combine graphic, Op-art aesthetics with invented hybrid creatures, or Chimeras, that contain human-animal-mechanical parts. She creates these Chimera figures by collaging together digital photographs of various components culled from the internet. She then draws a final version of the hybrid to use as a foundation for each of her paintings. Images are created when she places and transfers the drawing by hand several times within each composition. Optical color relationships and repetitions of shape and line dissolve into a complex pattern and create a visually intense, visceral experience.

Marjorie Van Cura has instructed students in drawing and painting courses at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Boston Architectural Center, Abington Art Center and the University of Pennsylvania. She has been a guest critic for art classes at New York Academy of Art, Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute and Catholic University.Marjorie Van Cura currently resides in New York and maintains a studio in Greenpoint Brooklyn. MACARONI HAM SALAD

1 pkg. 7oz.. elbow macaroni, cook & blanch in cold water, drain & chill

1/2 lb. pasteurized American cheese (cube)

1/2 lb. baked or broiled ham, cut into thin strips 2" long

1 can (13oz.) pineapple tidbits, drained

1/2 c. chopped sweet pickle

1 c. thinly sliced celery, cut on the diagonal

1 tsp. minced onion

1/3 c. mayonnaise or salad dressing

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. curry powder, optional

Salad greens, washed & drained

Combine ingredients except salad greens, toss lightly to mix well. Chill. Serve on salad greens.

Yield: 6-8 servings.

3 lbs. of Lean Cubed Beef

1-1/2 lbs. Beef Fat Cubed

20 oz. Catsup

5 lbs. of Potato, Cubed

2 lbs. Onions, Chopped

3 Cans #2-1/2 Tomatos

2 Sticks Celery

3 Pods Okra

1 T. Salt

1 T. Black Pepper

1 T. Wochestershire Sauce

1 T. Frank's Hot Sauce

1/2 c. Bacon Drippings

1 qt. Water

Brown Beef and Onions Separately, add Catsup & Tomato. Add all the Rest of The Rest at Once and Simmer for Two Hours or Until The Vegetables are Tender.

2 lbs. ground beef

1/2c. bell pepper & onion chopped

1 tsp. chili powder

1 c. uncooked rice

1 qt. (2 cans) tomatoes

Brown beef, add onions & pepper, tomatoes, & chili powder. Add this mixture with 1 c. uncooked rice. Bake in covered casserole @ 350 degree oven for 1 hr.

7Up Cake

1-1/2 c. margarine
3 c. sugar
4 eggs
3 c. flour
1 tbsp. lemon extract
3/4 c. 7UP
Cream sugar & butter together & beat until light & fluffy. Add eggs one at a time & beat well. Add flour. Beat in lemon extract & 7UP. Pour batter in well greased & floured bundt pan. Bake at 325deg. for 1-1/2 hrs.

Icing

1-1/2 c. white sugar
tbsp. corn starch (stir in sugar)
stick margarine
c. cold water

Cook over medium heat stirring constantly.
Stir in 1 small can crushed pineapple.
Beat until smooth.
Spread on cake when cake is cool.
Delicious.

Shipwreck Casserole

From: Golda Mae Potter Maryville, Tenn.

Place in baking dish 1 lb. ground chuck, salt & pepper.

Over the meat sprinkle a layer of chopped onion, 3 layers sliced potatoes, salt,

1/2 cup grated cheese, 1 small can pork & beans,

1/2 can (or a little more) condensed tomato soup.

Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1-1/2 hrs at 350.

My Father, Robert Brockman is curated to tell the tale of the multi-faceted and unique collection of ideas from all one man, my father. His work is a combination of paintings on canvas of the world that surrounds him to the inventions for the improvement of everyday life. A true Renaissance man, whose full spectrum of work will be combined for the first time in his first solo show in NY.

Robert Brockman- Born in 1945 to grape farmers in the small farming town of Delano, California. Brockman began painting at a young age, entering local art contests and winning awards. By 18 he had won 1^st place in the Kern County Fair art contest, leading him to become the director of the Delano Art Association. Brockman was soon asked to be the director of the Cunningham Art Gallery in Bakersfield, CA, at which time family and children lead him to take a different direction in life. Art became a sideline to designing various inventions, including the first domestically used irrigation system, golf spikes, disposable gas masks, mail shield opening systems and most recently a line of all-natural bug repellent. Brockman has continued painting throughout his life, from his heart and the landscapes that surround him.

Mary Brockman, Co-owner of Kill Devil Hill. Recently co-organized the exhibition and sale of The Menus of Chanterelle (2010), a retrospective of thirty years of contemporary art designed exclusively for the menus of the pioneering downtown restaurant, Chanterelle.
Kill Devil Hill, named best new antique shop of 2009 by the Village Voice, is spending February and March hosting a variety of pop-up shops and revolving art shows only to return with a bang April 1st.

Victory Over Death

Victory over Death is a sculpture we created to showcase the B.S. Mercantile frontier pants and cravats.

It was displayed on Nov.14.09 at Devotion Gallery for the Opening of Aire: The Second Fourfold Root

Victory Over Death - the elements

Wallpaper: Hand painted inspired by a victorian blood book called victory over death. The paper tells the story of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who should have died many times. He was captured by pirates only to escape during a battle between the pirates and Indians. He went to live with a peaceful Indian tribe, surviving many battles only to leave after his wife was captures by another tribe. He joined a trapping company, while on a trapping hunt he was attacked by a grizzly bear and left to die by his comrades. He was determind to survive, crawling 600 miles to the nearest fort to seek his revenge. He survived the 4 month crawl on berries and determination. He died of old age.

Mary Pickford was the first "American Sweetheart" of the silent silver screen.

She was a pioneer in the motion picture industry, one of the founding members of United Artist, and has since been named on of the leading women contributors to the movie industry.

During her time she was considered "the greatest woman who ever lived" by most Americans.

What sparked our interest in Mary Pickford was not only that she has three cocktails named after her, but how much she did to try and make the lives of everyone around her better. She started by nailing tin cans to the walls of movie studios to collect money for down and out actors after WWI. Mary then went on to set up The Motion Picture Relief Fund and The Motion Picture Country House and Hospital.

Mary Pickford was a remarkable woman that we could all learn from.

In her honor we will be making the first cocktail named after her, which was conceived by a legendary Cuban barman Vincenzo Marianella.

Most importantly will also be taking donations (of money) in Tin Cans for our neighborhood arts. No kidding. Its a Benefit.

From 1885-1886 his shop was here at our very own location of

170 Franklin St.

We met his lovely great-granddaughter who came to see what had become of his shop.

We will be serving up a New Orleans classic The Hurricane.

The Hurricane was invented by the infamous Pat O'Brian during WWII.

Whiskey was scarce, and bars were forced to order 50 cases of rum in order to get one case of whiskey. Pat O'Brian came up with a drink everyone loved in hopes of depleting his rum supply. O'Brian started his bar during prohibition, when he opened up a speakeasy , secret password to get in "storm's brewin"

Use the secret password and we'll give you some Mardi Gras beads!

It is a beautiful enamel top table from the 30's/40's. We striped down the countless layers of paint to bring it back to the beautiful wood finish it once had.

Here below is a 1940's table that was painted (I know! PAINTED! How gross?) Purple! And before it was Red... Ad before that WHITE! Its almost down to bear wood now... I am going to be restoring the table (fixing the leaf, building a new pine drawer) and refinishing (staining and clear coating)
